20 Congress rebels move against PM Koirala

Kathmandu, 24 March: Twenty Nepali Congress rebels Monday opposed the republican agenda pushed by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala in the 10 April constituent assembly election.
The rebels led by former Speaker Taranath Ranabhatt supported in a statement the policy of reconciliation of BP Koirala and also backed Krishna Prasad Bhattarai who is pushing constitutional monarchy.
The rebels said PM Koirala is pushing is pushing an extremist line.
The rebels have challenged official party candidates in the coming elections.
Two hundred candidates and supporters have been expelled.
Congress is facing an uphill challenge with internal dissent and new regional forces in the south bordering India or the tarai.
The elections will mainly be a triangular politics between Congress, CPN-UML and Maoists who are fighting elections for the first time after a 2006 peace treaty.
Emerging regional separatist forces in tarai will be a big challenge for traditional parliamentary parties Congress and CPN-UML.
No party is expected to win a majority in the assembly where 240 candidates are being directly elected..
