Govt. front sign deal

Kathmandu, 29 Feb: In another desperate bid to hold the 10 April elections Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, on behalf of Government, and the Federal Republican National Front (FRNF) Saturday signed a five-point agreement, among others, demanding a federal and structure.
The agreement makes it easier for Koirala to hold elections, particularly at the urging of foreign governments/
The front that called off a strike following the agreement.
Government this week signed a similar agreement with a front of three Madesh parties that gave controversial concessions to the south including a province and group recruitment into Nepal Army.
Three communist constituents of the ruling parties said the agreement was unconstitutional and anti-national signed without the agreement of all ruling parties by Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Maoists.
Meanwhile, EU heads of mission welcomed the government, Madesh agreement.
“The European Union Heads of Missions welcome the agreement concluded between the Government of Nepal and the United Democratic Madhesi Front. This agreement offers the opportunity to hold inclusive, credible, free and fair elections through-out Nepal, including in the Tarai region. The EU expects all parties to work together towards this including by fully implementing their commitments under this agreement and working to deliver a safe environment for elections.
“This is time for the elections. The Nepalese people want to express their will through the ballot box. That is why the European Union Heads of Missions reaffirm the importance of holding credible C.A. elections on the scheduled date (of 10th April 2008),” a statemet said.

Child missing in refugee camp fire

Kathmandu, 29 Feb: First reports said a child is missing in a devastating fire Saturday at a Bhutanese refugee camp Gholdap in Jhapa destroying all 1,000 huts and homes.
:Everything is lost and destroyed,” one reporter said from the area over radio.
The fire destroyed everything in three hours.
There are six camps in Jhapa and one in adjoining Morang district.
Altogether 108,000 refugees live in the UNHCR-administered camps.

Rabindra Nath Sharma resigns

Kathmandu, 29 Feb: Rabindra Nath Sharma Saturday resigned as chairman of the conservative RPP-Nepal which has again decided to contest the 10 April assembly elections.
The party took a decision to contest elections after originally withdrawing from it to support the Madesh movement.
RPP-Nepal together with another conservative party, Rashtriya Janasakti Party—decided to join elections after initially withdrawing.
RPP-Nepal decided to joint the election fray amid difference in the party.

Jwala Singh group to oppose elections

Kathmandu, 29 Feb: Jwala Singh group of the JTMM Saturday threatened to disrupe the 110 April constituent assembly elecions calling a one-month immediate protest programme.
The group that has carried out a violent bloody campaign calling for independence of the terai called for the suspension of all election-related activities.
The Singh and Goit groups have been responsible for nearly three dozen deaths in the region coupled with the expulsions of hill people from the region.
The Singh group came out against the government, terai front accord.
