1,000 individuals, firms in drawn into tax net

Kathmandu, 3 Dec: Internal Revenue Department has identified about 6,000 persons not in the tax net, Kantipur reports.
They are persons who have been avoiding tax payment.
Senior serving and retired officials, politicians, lawyers, doctors, engineers, auditors actors and actresses have been identified amongst them.
One official said smugglers, hundi traders, manpower agency operators, operators of brick kilns, education consultants, commission agents and real estate brokers are on a special watch-list.
“So far, 1etters have been sent to 1,000 individuals and firms,” said Director General Kapil Deb Ghimere.
He said letters have been dispatched to those already identified.
“We plan to sent letters to 7,000 firms and individuals by mid-December,” Ghimere said.

Marketing of Nepal’s real estate in USA

Kathmandu, 3 Dec: Twelve companies dealing housing are on a mission to market flats and houses in the USA, Kantipur reports.
The first “Nepal House, Land Fair” is being held in New York 27, 28 December, according to promoter Rajan Karmacharya.
Private banks, remittance companies and expatriate Nepalis in USA have booked 26 stalls at the fair.
The purpose of the fair is to encourage Nepalis in USA to invest in Nepal’s real estate sector.

Chinese goods to move through Tatopani from Wednesday

Kathmandu, 3 Dec: Business through the Tatopani customs point is set to resume from Wednesday after government officials and traders agreed to keep last year’s valuation structure intact, The Kathmandu Post reports from Chautara.
Earlier, traders has stopped importing goods through Tatopani after government decided to implement equal valuation in rates irrespective of the custom points through the Chinese goods were imported.
Agreement was reached Tuesday between customs officials and traders.
Huge losses were incurred after a stop in goods movement.
“We had been collecting Rs 12.5 million as revenue daily but we could generate just 4.2 million three days as most traders stopped importing goods,” said Chief of Tatopani Customs Office Chudamani Debkota.

International community wants restoration of consensus politics in Nepal

Kathmandu, 3 Dec: UNMIN Chief Ian Martin said consensus politics has snapped in Nepal with repetition of competitive politics.
International community wants its restoration, he told Kantipur TV.
“In my view, international community and foreign readers on Nepal visit again want to see the re-establishment consensus politics.
“But in my view, UNMIN and other international agencies can’t themselves be involved in the reinstating consensus politics,” Martin said.
“Political parties themselves have started to say past agreements are being broken. Competitive politics has surfaces. Right now, there’s no politics of consensus.”
Martin reiterated former Maoist combatants in 28 UNMIN-administered camps and cantonments can’t be directly recruited in UN peacekeeping force as suggested by Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala.
“I still say they can’t because Maoist combatants aren’t still state recognized national army. Only state recognized national army ire eligible for the peacekeeping force,” the chief of UNMIN said in reply to a question.
UNMIN mandate in Nepal ends 23 January 2009; Nepal is expected to extend it.
