Kathmandu, 13 Jan: Another person was shot dead in the terai overnight in continuing violence in the south.
Prominent district politician Raj Kumar Kimani was killed by a rebel group in Siraha where the district development office was also bombed.

Maoist candidate withdrawn in CA elections

Kathmandu, 13 Jan: Maoist candidate Top Bahadur Rayamajhi Tuesday withdrew his candidacy in elections for the chairmanship of parliament’s state affairs committee.
Ramajajhi’s withdrawal ensures the election of Ramnath Dhakal (CPN) as the committee’s chairman.
Maoists withdrew to ensure understanding with the second largest party in the ruling coalition.
Elections are being later Tuesday for chairpersons of four CA and parliamentary committees.

No agreement to form local bodies

Kathmandu, 13 Jan: Agreement overnight was elusive between 25 parties in the CA to form local bodies by Tuesday.
Smaller parties in the assembly demanded direct elections to local bodies.
Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, MJF and CPN-Unified pushed for formation of VDCs, municipalities and district development committees on basis of results of elections on proportional representation in the 10 April assembly vote.
Maoists demanded formation of local bodies on basis mixed election.
Results of elections on proportional representation basis prevented Maoists from gaining an absolute majority in elections for 601 seats in the assembly elections.
The country has been without local bodies for nearly nine years after their dissolution by the then government of Sher Bahadur Deuba triggering a political crisis that led to the downfall of the royal regime and scraping of the 1990 constitution by present rulers.
A crisis of sorts still continues.

NEA proposes by purchase power from captive co-generation plants


Kathmandu, 13 Jan: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Tuesday asked for proposals from industries to sell it power generated from captive co-generation plants.
The sole power distributing authority asked for proposals from industries amid a crippling power shortage forcing a 16-hour daily load-shedding schedule.
Industries have shut down and crime has shot in urban areas amid darkness.
Water distribution authorities said only 120 million liters of water is being supplied in the Valley every day after forced closure of pumping stations to draw ground water.
Daily demand is 230 million liters.
Only 60 percent of 700 Safa tempos are running.
There’s no electricity to charge batteries that run the tempos.
