EU condemns murder of woman journalist

Kathmandu, 13 Jan: Finland, the local Presidency of the Council of the European Union on behalf of EU missions expressed Tuesday its ‘deepest concern’ over the murder of female journalist Uma Singh on 11 January in Janakpur.
“We call on the authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into her death, to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
“The Government should give a strong message that there will be no impunity for attacks against freedom of expression and independent media, nor for any other serious crimes,” the Finland embassy statement said..
EU Missions called on all sectors of Nepali society to respect freedom of opinion and the rights of journalists.
“The EU believes it is necessary to strengthen the protection of women, and especially of Women Human Rights Defenders. The incidents of violence against women, which have increased, is a gross violation of human rights and the Government of Nepal has the responsibility to bring an end to these. We urge the Government to take urgent action,” the statement said.
The statement as PM Prachanda visits Finland and Norway next week
