Madhav Kumar Nepal appointed CA member

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: Former CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal has been nominated member of the CA by the council of ministers.
Nepal resigned after losing the 10 April constituent assembly elections from two constituencies and was replaced in the party by Jhalanath Khanal.
Maoists have asked Nepal to head the constitutional committee to draft Nepal’s new constitution.
Major parties have supported Nepal.
Nepal was nominated Saturday night after nominated member Sushil Chandra Amatya resigned.

Pokhara hotels, restaurants reopen

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: Hotels and restaurants reopened in the popular resort town of Pokhara Saturday after a three-day closure forcing hundreds of tourists to leave the town at the peak tourist season.
Maoist-affiliated workers demanding increased pay to match government jobs withdrew an indefinite strike and agreed to negotiate their demands.

Ian Martin leaving for New York

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: UNMIN Chief Ian Martin leaves Sunday for New York where the UN security council is discussing a proposal to extend the mission’s mandate for another six months after 23 January.
The mission is being reduced and downgraded.
Martin, who is also a special representative of the secretary-general, will be replaced by a representative only.

Maoist central committee to be expanded

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: Maoist central committee is being expanded from 35 to 95 members, Annapurna Post reports quoting party spokesman Dinanath Sharma.
Women, dalits, indigenous people and Maeshis will get priority in new appointments.
The party is also uniting with CPN (Unity Center/Mashal) Tuesday.

Matrika Prasad Yadav forming new party

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: Maoist central committee member Matrika Prasad Yadav is preparing to form a new party, Naya Patrika reports.
Yadvav is launching the party for a revolution in Madesh after Maoists ignored it.
“We are preparing to launch a revolutionary party,” Yadav told Naya Patrika. “Groups will come from all parties. There are only groups and no parties in Madesh now.”
Yadav was a minister in the Maoist government and became controversial after locking up a civil servant in a toilet in his ministry.

Bird flu alert

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: Government Saturday asked people in the eastern region not to visit areas across the border to prevent bird flu from entering Nepal.
The alert was issued after the infectious disease was found in Siligedi, West Bengal.

Saw mill bombed in Birjunj

Kathmandu, 11 Jan: There were no casualties when a saw bill was bombed overnight in Birgunj.
Prithvi-led Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha claimed responsibility.
