Maoist, Unity Center unification Monday

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: CPN (Maoist) and CPN (Unity Center/Mashal) will be unified Monday after a joint central committee meeting of the two radical communist parties.
The unified party will be called Unified Communist Party of Nepal Maoist.
The new party will still use the Maoist tag on CPN (Maoist) insistence.
Prachandapath, the driving political concept of CPN (Maoist) has been abandoned.
Two revolutionary parties have united for a decisive movement, they said after splitting in 1993.
Politburo or standing committee of the unified party will be most power, Maoist leader CP Gajurel said.

Jhalanath Khanal political report rejected by central committee

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: The 23rd CPN-UML extended central committee meeting Sunday night rejected the a political report presented by general Secretary Jhanalath Khanal for presentation at the party’s general convention meeting in Butwal from 16 February.
The report will be re-written to present a common party approach at the convention.
Khanal had presented his concept of people’s multi-party democracy to the committee for approval.
Khanal was charged for being uncritical of Maoists in government.
Influential party leader former General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal and KP Oli, contenders for chairmanship of the party—a powerful position being revived, were critical of the Khanal report.

Journalist shot dead in Janakpur

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: Woman journalist Uma Singh died of serious injuries in a khukri attack in Janakpur Sunday night.
Singh, a newsreader of Janakpur FM Today, died in Mohottari while being rushed by a vehicle to the capital for treatment of serious head injuries.
Bharat Shah and Shankar Shah were also injured in an explosion in the town overnight.
A group overnight also shot dead one person in Rautahat after raiding his home in a village in the district.
Violence continues unabated in the south.
Government has held separate discussions with four groups to resolve southern regional demands.
Maoist Madeshi central committee member and controversial former minister Matrika Prasad Yadav Sunday said he’ll launch a new party in Madesh calling most of the two dozen organizations active in the region just groups.

Differences in three parties on formation of local bodies

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: NC President Girija Prasad Koirala said Sunday in Biratnagar Maoists don’t know how to rule
He said Maoist-affiliated bodies were closing down industries, a crippling load-shedding had been enforced and law and order situation was deteriorating.
“They don’t know how to run the country,” Koirala said calling the situation ‘anarchic’.
Koirala also rejected PM Prachanda’s proposal for a new political understanding to replace re-place a 12-point agreement which hasn’t been implemented, according to the president.
“If Maoists move towards dictatorship, all democratic parties should unite,” Koirala said.

Three parties continue consultations for common candidate for chairpersons

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: Consultations between CPN (Maoist), CPN-UML and Nepali Congress are being held Monday after there was no agreement between the three parties Sunday for common candidates for chairpersons for 14 committees drafting a constitution and 10 parliamentary committees.
Names of candidates of chairmen are being filed later Monday.
There’s consensus to elect former CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal chairman of constitutional committee.

Manghe Sangkranti public holiday

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: Government Sunday declared Manghe Sangkranti being celebrated Tuesday a public holiday.
Manghe Sangkranti is a major festival of Tharus.
Hindus also celebrate the day.

Four arrested in attack of CDOs

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: Four persons have been arrested for attacking a vehicle in Pyuthan Sunday carrying CDOs Keshab Acharya and Krishnashyam Budhatokhi of Rolpa and Pyuthan respectively, officials in Pyuthan said.
They were returning after attending a function in Ghorai, Dang.
Pistols and bullets were recovered from assailants who robbed passengers of nearly one million rupees.

RPP-Nepal celebrates Prithbijayanti

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: RPP-Nepal Sunday held a tea party to commemorate Prithvi janti, the founder of modern Nepal.
Chairmaan Kamal Thapa said the founder of the Shah dynasty that ruled Nepal until 2008 was a national hero.
The government of Girija Prasad Koirala stopped the traditional practice of celebrating the day as national unity day after April 2005.

Bangladesh Biman returns after failure to land

Kathmandu, 12 Jan: Bangladesh Biman aircraft developed flap problems while approaching to land at Kathmandu International Airport Sunday and returned to Dhaka where it landed safely.
Pilot alertness saved a probable accident, an airport official said.
