Standoff continues

Kathmandu, 1 May: A standoff continues between Maoists and other parties on determination of the Unified CPN (Maoist) to sack Army Chief Gen Rukmangud Katawal for what has been described as defiance against civilian authority.
But President Dr Ram Baran Yadav advised Prime Minister Prachanda not to ac in haste and take a decision only through consensus.
CPN-UML standing committee Thursday threatened to quit government if Maoists take a unilateral decision.
Prachanda Friday held discussions with Indian Ambassador Rakesh Soon who returned after consultations in New Delhi.

Tharu strike cripples life

Kathmandu, 1 May: A 10-day strike by Tharus demanding de-linking from Madesh crippled life craeating shortages in variousparts of the country, including g the capital.
The srike has turned violent.
There’s no immediate kindication of an end to the strike.

National Investigation dept. being dissolved

Kathmandu, 1 May: Government is dissolving the cocuntry’s intennigence ldepartment-National Investigation department, Annapurna Post reports.
Instead, a national Intelligence Bureau is being created.
The prime minister will overseee it.
The bureau will be administered by the home ministry.
The council of ministers will take a decision soon on creating the bureau.

Three parties back democratic front led by Nepali Congress

Kathmandu, 1 May: Three parties have decided to support a democratic front led by Nepali Congress, Annapurna Post reports.
Rashtriya Janasakthi Party Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa, RPP Chairman Pashupati SJB Rana and RPP-Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa reached the decision.
A meeting was held at Surya Bahadur Thapa’s house Thursday.

24 hour alert at airport


Kathmandu, 1 May: A health team has been deputed at Tribhuvan International Airport for 24 hours to keep a vigil on swine flu.
The flu was first detected in Mexico and has spread to several countries.
Tourists visiting Nepal from countries where the disease has broken out will be screened.
