Kathmandu, 20 Dec: Dozens, including nine policemen, were injured in clashes with Maoist activities at Naya Baneshwor in the capital during the first day of a three-day main opposition strike.
One policeman is injured with serious head injuries.
Officials said one dozen vehicles were vandalized in the capital by demonstrators.
Police lobbed teargas shells and used water hoses to quell demonstrators.
Dozens of Maoists were injured, including an opposition lawmaker.
Police and demonstrators in other parts of the city were Maoists vandalized vehicles for defying the strike.
Vehicular movement was negligible.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal who returned home from Denmark was escorted to Baluwatar under heavy security.
Clashes have broken out in other parts of the country.
Nepal urged understanding to end a political deadlock.
A tradition has developed for all political parties to go on protests after ouster from government even as they discourage street politics when in government.

China returns detained Nepali containers

Kathmandu, 20 Dec.: Chinese traders in Khasa, across the Nepal-Tibet border, Sunday released 26 Nepali containers held up yesterday destined to the capital with imported Chinese goods.
The goods belonged to Nepali traders.
Chinese traders seized containers with goods worth Rs 150 million in Khasa Saturday.
They were demanding release of $300,000 seized in the capital from colleagues this year by looters.
Police have been charged for involvement.

Details of Gulmi shooting

Kathmandu, 20 Dec.: A policeman in in serious condition and is undergoing treat at a hospital in Tamghas, Gulmi, after shooting and injuring a woman campus student overnight.
The student is out of danger, the hospital said.
