Supreme court intervenes in promotion of Toran Bahadur Singh

Kathmandu, 3 Jan.: A one-man bench of Supreme Court Chief Justice Anup Raj Sharma has ordered Nepal Army Sunday not to promote Maj. Gen. Toran Bahadur Singh to Lt. Gen until Sunday.
The apex court has asked the state army for reasons for his promotion.
Maoists had challenged the legality of the promotion of the genrral charged for human rights abuse.

Sujata Koirala’s call for referendum on opposed

Kathmandu, 3 Jan.: A call by Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala Saturday for referendum to decide a federal structure was opposed at a meeting of the main constitution drafting committee chaired Sunday by Chairman Nilambar Acharya.
Speakers, including Maoists, said the demand was against the spirit of the comprehensive peace agreement and the interim constitution.
They demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal who later told journalists he view was her own and didn’t reflect government opinion.
The committee couldn’t finalize a recommendation for a proposed constitution after the controversy.
Members of the 65-member committee demanded more
time for deliberations.
Subjects were put to vote last week after there was no unanimity on concepts.

Nepal signing agreements with China, India to save tigers

Kathmandu, 3 Jan.: Nepal is signing an agreement with China in February coinciding with “Year of the Tiger” to protest the animal, Kantipur reports.
A similar agreement is being signed with India
Ministers of China and Nepal are signing the agreement for which officials of the two countries have completed formalities.

Children under five years to get govt. stipend

Kathmandu, 3 Jan.: Children of Dalits and underprivileged will henceforth get Rs 200 monthly subsidy in the form of social security, Annapurna Post reports.
Children under five years will benefit.
Government has set aside Rs 720 million for the programme.
