Girija cremated, daughter Sujata lights funeral pyre
Kathmandu, 21 March: Former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was cremated at Pashupatinath Aryaghat Sunday evening.
Daughter Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minster Sujata lit the funeral pyre at 7.45 in the evening.
The army played the national anthem, sounded the last post and offered a gun salute as cannons boomed in a state funeral for a head of state.
He acted as a head of state after the toppling of democracy even though he was never formally elected president.
The funeral procession started from Dashrath Rangashala at three in the afternoon, one hour after schedule as thousands of people offered their last respects.
Thousands lined the streets as the procession proceeded to Pashupatinath from the stadium.
