Constituent assembly session adjourned indefinitely

By Bhola B Rana

Kathmandu, 2 April: A meeting of the constituent assembly (CA) was adjourned indefinitely without sending recommendations and suggestions of eight remaining subject committees for inclusion in a constitution to be promulgated by the 28 May deadline.
The deadline will most likely not be met with the adjournment, as expected.
The assembly Friday sent suggestions for articles of one more subject committee to a main constitution drafting committee headed by Nilambar Acharya.
Acharya’s committee has received only suggestions from three of 11 committees.
He had demanded the drafting committee required consensus suggestions from all 11 committees to prepare and suggest a draft constitution for adoption by the CA.
With only 56 days remaining for the promulgation of a constitution to institutionalize a republic declared by an unelected and self-appointed parliament, the deadline won’t be met.
Parties aren’t concerned though.
Many believe a brief constitution has been prepared by them and a way devised by three major parties to extend the two-year tenure of the assembly to prepare a constitution without popular will.
Dissolution and election for new CA has been demanded.
People had elected parliament and assembly members only for a two-year term.
The politics of convenience to suit three-party interests is being pushed as a transition has lasted four years.

“’What alarms the political class the most is the prospect this time of the international community rallying the other way. Our two giant neighbours are both worried in the deepening crisis but neither side is in a position to intervene drastically. The international community—regardless of the UNMIN fiasco- has no appetite for an open-ended commitment that would make Afghanistan look like a picnic.”
