India releases 11 of 39 newsprint consignments (DEVELOPING STORY)
By Bhola B Rana
Kathmandu, 25 June: India Friday evening released 11 of 39 consignments of newsprint held at Kolkata port following, Kantipur Publications said.
The remaining consignments imported from Canada and South Korea are expected to be released Monday, an official announcement said.
The release followed a meeting between newspaper management and Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood Friday.
The consignment destined for land-locked Nepal was held for nearly one month on pretext of revenue investigation.
The detention raised a controversy and stir in Nepal with lawmakers saying the hold-up was against the spirit of a bilateral transit treaty.
This is the first time India has acted against a ‘hostile media’ by intercepting newspaper import.
Regular publication of supplements of The Kathmandu Post and Kantipur was adversely affected with the intervention following newsprint shortage.
