Jhalanath Khanal UML candidate for premier (BREAKING NEWS)

Kathmandu, 20 July: Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has been proposed by the UML standing committee as its candidate for prime minister in Wednesday’s election.
Khanal’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and second by Secretary Bishnu Paudel.
But the standing committee in a rider decided Khanal should withdraw his candidacy if he can’t muster 401 votes or two-third seat in the 601-member parliament which has only 599 members with the deaths of several lawmakers.
A Maoist politburo meeting couldn’t decide on a candidate and has referre4d the issue to a meeting of office bearers which has started.
Four nomination papers have been collected from the office of parliament with less than two remaining for the deadline to lfile nominations by five in the afternoon.
Papers have been collected on behalf of NC candidate Ram Chndra Paudel, Khanal, and two other candidates—not Maoists.
One section of UCPN (Maoist) Monday decided to push the candidacy of Khanal.
Maoists and UML can form a majority communist government—which if it materializes, will be a setback for the so-called democratic front.
