Kathmandu, 21 July: A UML proposal to elect Chairman Jhalanath Khanal prime minister to succeed Madhav Kumar Nepal was withdrawn in parliament Wednesday evening by Nepal who proposed the resolution.
Speaker Subash Nemwang didn’t put the proposal to vote.
Nepal told parliament the party central committee decided Tuesday Khanal would contest only if a written commitment was received from 401 lawmakers who didn’t extend the support,
Amid laughter from lawmakers, Nepal claimed his caretaker government still had majority support in parliament and said the UML opted to ‘show an example’ by going for a two-third majority government.
The experiment failed.
Maoist chairman Prachanda failed to get a majority.
The candidacy of NC Vice-Chairman Ram Chandra Paudel was also defeated by a majority vote in the 599-seat parliament Wednesday.
Paudel received 124 votes while 235 lawmakers votes against him, Nemwang said.
While 597 lawmakers were present, 228 parliamentarians voted against Paudel.
