UNMIN SUBMITS DETAILS OF MAOIST COMBATANTS

Kathmandu, 10 Oct.: UNMIN Sunday submitted details of an updated list 19,000 plus combatants with and names and their photos to the peace ministry as demanded by government.
The list includes permanent addresses and ages.
UNMIN earlier gave government an electronic version of the list.
The fresh list says there are 19,532 combatants under UNMIN watch—down only by 70 combatants enlisted in 2007.
The details were provided even as the UN political wing in Nepal said earlier it has no mechanism to monitor the movement of former PLA combatants in 28 satellite camps and cantonments.
The accuracy of the fresh is doubtful because hundreds of Maoist child soldiers under UN watch had fled camps.
There’s a mechanism in an arms and ammunition agreement between then parliamentary parties and Maoists to monitor the combatants in the camps to which Nepal’s security agencies have no entry.
The mechanism was never formed.
UNMIN earlier refused to provide details.
The UN agency came under heavy government fire when in a report to the last UN securitycoucil meeting UNMIN chief Karin Landgren told the world body UNMIN and Maoists had agreed to provide details of combatants to government.
Government was furious for being kept n the dark.
“UNMIN released the data following the necessary agreement of the parties. I view that agreement as another positive step in the peace process,” UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren said.
