NO AGREEMENT ON CONSENSUS CANDIDATE FOR PM
Kathmandu, 21 Jan: There’s no likelihood of parliament electing a consensus prime minister later Friday – the week-long deadline set by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to elect a successor of Madhav Kumar Nepal who continues as a caretaker even after resigning 30 June 2010.
Top leaders of Maoists, NC and UML couldn’t agree on a consensus candidate and amendment of parliamentary procedure for the election of a government chief.
The parties will make a final effort for an understanding before the legislature meets Friday.

UML CHAIRMAN SLAPPED
Kathmandu, 21 Jan.: UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal was slapped on the face Thursday at a public programme in Inaruwa, Sunsari.
Khanal minimized the incident.
He was bruised on a nose.
Khanal was slapped by Debi Prasad Regmi, a farmer, as thechairman was welcoming new entrants into the party.
Regmi has been arrested.

NEW OHCHR-N CHIEF
Kathmandu, 21 Jan.: Jyoti Sanghera, a Canadian of Indian descent,
has been appointed chief of UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights-Nepal (OHCHR-N), an announcement said.
She replaces Richard Bennette.
“Sanghera has been tasked by the High Commissioner to direct
the work of OHCHR-N which, as per the renewed terms of its mandate in June 2010, has now closed down its field offices in the regions and restructured its shape and tasks in a new configuration n Kathmandu,” the announcement added.
