POLICE CLAIM BREAKTHROUGH IN CAPITAL MURDERS

Kathmandu, 18 April: Police claim they have made a breakthrough in the investigation surrounding the recent armed attacks in Teku and Ganabahal in the Capital. An employee of Sipradi Trading Company — Prem Krishna Maharjan — was shot dead and another sustained bullet injuries on March 25 while an Indian trader — Anjani Kumar Chachan— was gunned down in his apparel shop by unidentified armed assailants, The Kathmandu Post reports.

Sleuths — who are under intense pressure from the public as well as the police administration — claimed they have managed to get hold of one of the gang members involved in the killing of Chachan and Maharjan. Police have kept the identity of the gang member secret on security grounds.

Sources claimed that swift interrogation of the suspect has pointed the investigators to a breakthrough in despite sketchy information. “Within a few days, police will unfold the mystery surrounding these two shootings,” said a senior police officer.

Suspicion is rife that personal vendetta as well as failed extortion bid could be the factors behind the killings. Police also suspect that Chachan was probably not the main target of the assailants as they had come looking for another businessman where Chachan owned his shop.

Meanwhile, sleuths are still in the dark over the failed assassination bid on the lives of Energy Minister Gokarna Bista on April 11 and an official of Kathmandu-based Pakistani Embassy Mehboob Asif.

The recent attacks have once again highlighted the alarming security situation in a volatile country undergoing a transitional phase, while

the ill-equipped police are over a barrel how to solve criminal cases.
