DEUBA FLEXING MUSCLE TO SEIZE GOVT. POWER
Kathmandu, 10 July: Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba today held consultations with Central Working Committee members and leaders close to him at his residence in Budhanilakantha about how to make decision from the party to field him as the party’s candidate for the next prime minister, The Himalayan Times reports..

Sources close to Deuba said his faction would pressure party President Sushil Koirala after he returned from his USA visit in a few days. “Deuba should be made the prime ministerial candidate by forging consensus in the party as per the understanding made between Koirala and Deuba while nominating Ramchandra Paudel and Krishna Sitaula as vice president and general secretary, respectively, in April,” said the sources. “It was a courtesy call made by central leaders to Deuba after the latter returned from taking part in the assembly of Socialist International recently. In the brief meeting, we also discussed the current politics,” said CWC member Bimalendra Nidhi.

On who should be fielded as the prime ministerial candidate from the party, Nidhi said it was a matter which should be put on the table for discussion only after other parties accepted NC’s leadership in the government. “Our party will hold talks with the Unified CPN-Maoist and CPN-UML first,” he said.

While Deuba is intensifying his exercise to get himself endorsed as the prime ministerial candidate from the party, NC Parliamentary Party leader Paudel seems to be ready to accept Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal as the next prime minister. According to party sources, Paudel has already started lobbying for the same.

Paudel wants to support Dahal now with the condition that he would succeed Dahal when the country goes to general elections after the promulgation of the constitution, said the sources.

Around 15 leaders including Arjun Narsingh KC, Pushpa Bhusal and Govinda Raj Joshi were present at the meeting in Deuba-residence today. “Deuba will hold talks with party President Koirala to implement the past understanding,” said a leader close to Deuba.

Koirala, who had left for the USA for his regular health check-up two weeks ago, will probably return after three or four days according to his personal secretary Laxman Dhakal.

Meanwhile, CWC member Ram Sharan Mahat, who is close to Koirala, today said at a programme that there was no possibility of any Maoist leader becoming next prime minister until the completion of peace process.
