VOTING FOR PM SUNDAY UPDATE

Kathmandu, 25 Aug.: First round of parliamentary election for prime minister to succeed Caretaker Prime Minister Jhalanath
Khanal will held Sunday at one in the afternoon.
Nominations will be filed Thursday.
Parliament’s business advisory committee fixed the election process at a meeting Wednesday morning.
Second Maoist Vice-chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel are the only two candidates for the vote.
Paudel couldn’t get elected by majority vote in elections more than 30 months ago against Jhalanath Khanal and Maoist Chairman Prachanda.
Khanal was elected to head a majority communist government in February this year with Maoist vote finally.
Madhav Kumar Nepal continued as caretaker for seven months
after resigning.
The voting won’t be extended after parliamentary procedures were amended with experience.
Only three rounds of voting will be allowed and no lawmaker or party can abstain in a vote.
Paudel will need the vote of a broad alliance to ensure his victory.
Bhattarai can be elected in UML supports his candidacy.
A section in the UML led by former Pime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is opposed to Maoist leadership of government.
Most recently the UML said Maoist leadership isn’t acceptable until the peace and constitution processes are completed.
NC President Sushil Koirala held consultations with Nepal at the latter’s residence Thursday.
Maoist standing committee has been meeting since Thursday morning to discuss and approve Chairman Prachanda’s recommendations for integration, relief packages and others proposals related to the 19,000 former PLA fighters in 28camps and cantonments financed largely by five EU states.through a peace fund managed by government,

CHIEFS OF PUBLIC ENTERPRICES APPOINTED

Kathmandu, 25 Aug.: The outgoing government Wednesday appointed chiefs of public enterprises under the industry ministry.
Ramesh Kumar Aryal has bee appointed general manager of Hetauda Cement Industry Ltd.and Bhairab Bahadur Bohara chairman and Dr. Ram Narayan Shah have been appointed chairman and general manager respectively of Nepal Medicine Ltd which remains closed.
Shaukhi Lal Paswan has been appointed chairman of Janakpur Cigarette Factory which is also shut.
Min Bahadu Thakuri chairman of Udayapur Cement Industry.
Shiba Sharan Neupane and Gautam Man Shrestha have been appointed chairman and general manager respectively of Industrial Area Management Ltd.
Pancha Lal Maharjan and Maedani Prasad Neupane have been appointed chairman and general manager respectively of Industrial
Development Center.

POVERTY UP IN NEPAL SAYS ADB STUDY

Kathmandu, 25 Aug.: --some low-income countries such as Indonesia, Pakistan and Nepal fared badly with the number of poor people growing last year compared to 2005, AFP reports
from Manila.
As of last year, the extreme poor, constituted 18.7 percent of the population of developing Asian countries, down from 27.09 percent in 2005, the bank said.
