Major air crashes in last 20 years
• 31 July, 1992: A Thai Airways Airbus crashed into Ghyangphedi, Nuwakot, killing 113 people.
• 28 Sept, 1992: A PIA Airbus crashed at Bhattedanda in Lalitpur, killing 167 people.
• 27 July, 2000: A Twin-Otter of the Royal Nepal Airlines crashed in Dadeldhura, killing 25.
• 21 June, 2006: A Yeti Airlines Twin-Otter crashed at Jumla Airport, killing 9.
• 24 September 2006: Shree Air helicopter crashed at Taplejung killing 24.
• 3 March 2008: A UN helicopter crashed at Ramechhap killing 10.
• 8 Oct 2010: An Agni Air plane crashed in Lukla killing 14.
• 16 Dec 2010: A Tara Air plane crashed in Makawanpur killing 22.
Kathmandu, Sept. 25, Aviation experts Sunday claimed that most of the incidents of plane crash in Nepal are attributed to pilots’ error, The Rising Nepal reports.
They also suspected human error behind the crash of Buddha Air aircraft Sunday in which 19 persons were killed.
Speaking at a function organised by the Reporters’ Club, Captain Yubaraj Bhattarai claimed that it was not necessary for the Beechcraft plane to go that far away and descend to such a low height to land at the airport in Kathmandu.
According to him, such accidents occur when pilots do not follow rules of VFR and IFR.
"Most accidents occur due to pilots, the weather should not be blamed," he said
He claimed that no plane in Nepal met accidents due to technical problems.
But he said that Nepal had no expert to study air accidents and reports on air crashes lacked authenticity.
General Manager of Nepal Airlines Corporation K.B. Limbu claimed that the Buddha Air plane might have crashed due to human error. The plane digressed so far away from the airport and flew low only due to human error.
Another pilot Rabindra Sherchan said that Nepali sky could not be safe as no report prepared by the probe committees of the past were implemented.
He also attributed human error in Sunday’s crash.
However, senior meteorologist Rajendra Prasad Shrestha said that the accident might have occurred due to poor visibility.
He claimed that the plane was flown despite the meteorologists had submitted their forecast report of bad weather on Sunday in the central and western regions of the country.
According to Shrestha, the visibility of the airport was six km in between 6:30 am to 7:00 am. "Although the plane could land at such visibility, the accident occurred as the route to the airport was under thick fog.
Since 1949, when the first plane landed in Nepal, 600 people have been killed in about 70 air accidents. The most fatal air accident occurred on 28 September in 1992 when an Airbus of Pakistan International Airlines crashed at Bhattedanda of Lalitpur killing all 167 on board.
