SUB-COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS CONSTITUTON DIFFRENCES ACTIVATES ITSELF

NC CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETS SATURDAY

Kathmandu, 3 Sept.: Main opposition NC central committee also meets Saturday.
The meeting will review the drubbing it got from Maoists in the just concluded parliamentary elections for prime minister.
Its candidates Sher Bahadur Deuba and Vice-chairman Ram Chandra Paudel were defeated by Second Maoist Vice-chairman Dr. Babauram Bhattarai.
The central committee will also adopt a formal party position on a four-point agreement between Maoists and a front of five terai parties to form a UCPN (Maoist), Front government, General Secretary Prakash Man Singh said.
Top NC leaders have vehemently denounced the agreement, except Sher Bahadur Deuba, who has adopted a wait and see attitude amid cautious comments.

SUB-COMMITTEE TO RESOLVE DIFFERENCES ON CONSTITUTION MEETS

Kathmandu, 3 Sept. A sub-committee headed by Maoist Chairman Prachanda to resolve differences on themes for inclusion in a proposed constitution met for the first time Saturday after a tenure of the constituent assembly (CA)was extended by another three months.
The last tenure ended 31 August without drafting and promulgating a constitution to institutionalize a declared republic.
The sub-committee with representatives of the Big Three reports to a main constitution drafting committee headed by Nilambar Acharya.
The sub-committee last met one month ago.
Like a robot, the sub-committee activates itself after tenure extension and lapses loses its momentum as weeks and months pass without agreement on fundamentals—such as a communist or a liberal democratic structure.
Prime Minister Dr.Baburam Bhattarai has already said a draft of a basic law won’t be completed again in the coming three months and has said government will seek an 11th amendment to the constitution to extend assembly tenure by at least six months.
