DRI SEALS WAREHOUSES ON THREE MORE FIRMS
Kathmandu, 7 Sept : The Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) that has been investigating the case of Indian Currency (IC) misappropriations by five firms Tuesday sealed three more firms in Birgunj and arrested their proprietors on suspicion of misusing Rs 62.9 million worth of Indian Currency (IC), Prabhakar Ghimere writes in Republica.
A joint team of DRI, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force in coordination with the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry sealed the warehouses of Nitesh Brothers, Jaibaba Amar Nath and Gangotri Gallaghar in Birgunj.
The proprietor of those firms Dinesh Gupta too has been arrested.
Shanta Bahadur Shrestha, director general of DRI, told Republica that those firms were involved in importing dry foods, spices and other food grains.
“We sealed warehouses of the three firms and arrested the proprietor on a tip-off. We´ve also seized CPUs of computers in the warehouses and checks issued by Birgunj-based branch of Everest Bank and Rastriya Banijya Bank,” Shrestha added.
The team also collected bank statement of the firms from Everest Bank. It will receive statement of the firms from Rastriya Banijya Bank on Wednesday.
According to Shrestha, preliminary investigation shows that Gupta is one of the members of an IC misappropriation racket that has misappropriated over Rs 770 million worth of Indian currency over the past six months in the name of importing goods from India by producing fake customs declaration forms and demand drafts.
A joint investigation carried out by the DRI and Parsa District Police Office last week had found Maxwell Computer, Shyam Galla Bhandar, Jaya Mata Di International, Digital World and GS Traders of producing nine fake customs declaration forms to withdraw huge amount of IC from different commercial banks.
Police have already sent five suspects -- Kul Bhusan Mishra, Suresh Mishra, Sandeep Sah, Arabinda Kumar Sah and Ramesh Kumar Sah -- into judicial custody for further investigation.
DRI has formed a seven-member team led by its director Mohan Lal Chand to investigate into the cases. The team has started verifying the authenticity of custom declaration forms submitted by the five firms from Tuesday.
