ROAD ACCIDENTS DECREASE IN DASAIN

Kathmandu, 11 October : Road accidents in the Kathmandu Valley during main Dashain period decreased this year in comparison to last year, a senior traffic police officer said Monday, The Rising Nepal reports.
Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jagat Man Shrestha, said during the Dashain day, the valley witnessed just a single serious road accident in which one person at Satdobato, Lalitpur was killed.
During four days from October 3 to 6, 10 road accidents took place in the valley, whereas last year, 46 serious road accidents took place during the same festive time, SSP Shrestha said.
Similarly, last year two persons had lost lives in road accidents in the Kathmandu Valley.
Spokesperson Shrestha said this time a total of 111 vehicles were involved in different types of minor and major road accidents. Of the total numbers, 72 motorcycles were involved in road accidents.
SSP Shrestha said most of these accidents occurred because of reckless driving habits and in intoxication.
When asked about reason behind the fall in road accident, SSP Shrestha said this time, MTPD put more focus on ‘driver’s memory fit’ strategy which led to the fall in the number of accidents. Under this strategy, high number of traffic policemen on the road is deployed so that the "accident prone" driver becomes alert and conscious about their reckless driving.
Apart from this, he said, "This year we have mobilized 25 per cent more traffic policemen in the valley roads. MTPD has a total of 965 traffic policemen at present.
"We brought more traffic police personnel from outside the Kathmandu Valley to maintain the dense presence of traffic policemen on the road," he said. The hour of duty of the traffic police personnel were also increased this time. "Our traffic policemen worked extra two hours along with their regular 12-14 hours of duty during the Dashain time," Shrestha said.
He said MTPD gave stress on creating awareness among the reckless drivers rather than carrying out check ups of vehicle documents and drivers’ licenses. "This helped us in lowering road accidents in the valley this year," he said.
