BIGGEST ETHNIC GROUPS CHHETRIS, BRAHMINS DEMAND RECOGNITION

CHHETRIS, BRAHMINS, NEPAL’S LARGEST ETHNICL GROPUS. DEMAND RECOGNITION AFTER BEIBG SIDELNED IN NAYA NEPAL
Kathmandu, 15 Nov.: The Brahman Chhetri Society staged a massive sit-in in front of the Constituent Assembly building, New Baneshwor, demanding the inclusion of Brahmin and Chhetri communities in the indigenous group in the constitution, RSS reports.

Before staging the sit-in, the Khas Chhetri Society National Federation, and the Brahman Society Nepal organised a massive rally from Tinkune to New Baneshwor.

Federation Chairman Kumar Bahadur Thapa said the interim constitution of Nepal had mentioned the Brahmin and Chhetris as 'other' caste which must be corrected by writing Brahmin and Chhetri in the new constitution. The State needs to provide service not based on caste but on class, he said, adding that federalism must be determined not based on ethnicity but on distribution of natural resources and economic development.

Similarly, Chairman of the Brahman Society Nepal, Narayan Prasad Adhikari said mentioning Chhetri with 20 percent population and the Brahmin with 13 percent population in the country as 'other' in the interim constitution was disgracing these castes.
