COUNTERFEIT IRS CURRENCY NOTES WORTH RS. 37.7M SEIZED IN ONE YEAR
Kathmandu, 18 Nov.: The Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office (MPCO) and its subordinate units have confiscated fake Indian currency notes worth IRs 32.7 from mid-November 2010 to mid-November this year, nearly double the haul of the corresponding period last year, The Himalayan Times reports.

MPCO, presenting its annual progress report on the occasion of the sixth Metropolitan Police Day, said the seizure of fake Indian currency notes jumped from IRs 16.5 million in 2010 to IRs 32.7 million in 2011. It said the smuggling of fake currency notes into India through the porous Indo-Nepal border continues unabated during the period.

SSP Rabi Raj Shrestha, the MPCO spokesperson, said proactive policing and deployment of detectives for intelligence gathering had made the haul possible. In the same period, police seized fake Nepali notes amounting to Rs 39,600 and IRs 32.7 million in the Valley and arrested at least 25 racketeers and mules, SSP Shrestha informed. “We filed 14 charges against the accused as per the chapter of Counterfeiting Currency of the Civil Code.” Of the arrested, 15 are Pakistanis, one is Thai national and the rest of them are Nepalis, according to statistics.

DIG Narayan Prasad Bastakoti, chief of the Airport Security Guards, said they are keeping round-the-clock vigil at the Tribhuvan International Airport to check the smuggling of fake Indian currency notes. Airport police had, on November 1, arrested Pakistani national Mohammed Salim (45) with fake Indian currency notes having the face value of IRs 3.9 million.

During the same period, police arrested 7,999 people for murder, abduction and possession of drugs as well as illegal weapons. According to MPCO, 831 criminals are still at large.

Officers awarded

MPCO on Thursday conferred the ‘Best Circle In-charge’ award on DSP Tek Bahadur Tamang, chief of the Kalimati Metropolitan Police Circle, and adjuged the metro police unit the ‘Best Metropolitan Police Circle for its top-notch performance in the Valley’.

DSP Uttam Raj Subedi and Inspector Bhisma Humagain got the award of best operation officer and best police investigator as part of sixth Metropolitan Police Day celebrations. Inspector General of Police Rabindra Pratap Shah gave away the awards at a special function organised in the Capital. Civil society members were also honoured for contribution to crime investigation.

FOREIGN MINISTRY STUDY ADMITS IT CAN’T DO ANYTHING WHEN PASSPORTS ARE ISSUED AGAINST FAKE CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATES

Kathmandu, 18 Nov. An internal foreign ministry probe of passport misuse conducted by a team of Joint Secretary Dhananda Jha submitted its report Thursday to Foreign Minister Narayan Kazi Shrestha, Annapurna Post reports.
The report was prepared in five months.
The study admits the ministry can’t do anything when passports issued by the foreign ministry against fake citizenship papers.
