CHINA TO ADDRESS BORDER PROBLEM TO REDUCE TRADE GAP

Kathmandu, 4 Nov.:, As per the proposal from the Nepalese side, Chinese representatives have agreed to solve the border problems between Nepal and China and help reduce the Nepalese trade deficit with China, The Rising Nepal reports.
A Chinese delegation, which arrived here to inaugurate the 13th Nepal-China Tibet Economic and Trade Fair, agreed on the deal at a discussion with the Nepalese side on Thursday.
At the discussion organised on reducing Nepal’s trade deficit with China and enhancing the economic relations between the two countries, Minister for Commerce and Supplies Lekhraj Bhatta proposed to the Chinese delegation to solve the border problems through mutual discussions for reducing the Nepalese trade deficit.
Vice-chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China Wu Yingjie welcomed the proposal and said that the government of China was ready to solve all the practical and process related problems in the border at the joint initiation of the two countries.
On the occasion, Minister Bhatta said that Nepal was bearing alarming trade deficit with China as it had not got the facility of the zero customs offered by China to the undeveloped countries.
Nepalese export items have not got the zero customs facility to China due to the taxes levied by the local government of Tibet Autonomous Region. Due to this Nepal faced a trade deficit of around Rs.43 billion in the last fiscal year.
Now China has been offering zero customs rates to 721 Nepalese items. But Nepalese products have no easy access as Tibetan government failed to establish sufficient quarantine check posts in the border.
Mentioning the compulsory provision of Chinese language in name, label and composition as one of the hurdles in the export of Nepalese items, Minister Bhatta urged the Chinese delegation to accept the English language too.
Bhatta also demanded easy banking services in the border areas to facilitate the payment system of the bilateral trade. Responding to this proposal, Wu said he would consult immediately with the central bank of China in this regard.
According to the government officials, the government is also losing revenues due to the difficult and nontransparent payment system in bilateral trade with China.
"We have taken the proposals introduced by Nepal on expanding railway service to the border of Nepal, establishing special industrial sector, and management of store to the export items seriously, said Wu.
The Chinese delegation has also taken the Nepalese proposal of making Tinker border point as the transit point of Nepal, India and China.
Nepalese side also asked the Chinese representatives for timely dissemination of information on the policy changes to facilitate the bilateral trade.
The two sides have also agreed to continue bilateral discussions at different levels in the coming days to facilitate the bilateral trade.
