NEPAL ARMY MAJOR PILOT KILLED IN CAR CRASH

Kathmandu, 13 Jan.: Nepal Army Major ad pilot Ashish Basnet, was among three persons killed in a car crash at Jamune on the Prithvi Highway inTanahu Thursday.
The car turned turtle after skidding.
Bhaskhar Shah and Sandip Pal were also killed.

PRESIDENT FLAGS OFF APPA SHERPA CLIATE DRIVE

Kathmandu, 13 Jan.:: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today bid farewell to Appa Sherpa and his team who left on their four-month long 1,700 km east to west trek along the Great Himalayan Trail, The Himalayan Times reports.

“The trek will help identify impact of climate change on the Himalayas and showcase how sustainable tourism can be used as a tool for poverty reduction,” said Yadav during the farewell programme at his residence.

Dawa Steven Sherpa, Saurav Dhakal and Samir Jung Thapa are the other members of the team that will trek through hundreds of villages across 20 districts over four months.

According to Himalayan Climate Initiative, which is managing the trek, the adventure aims to bring to light the impact of climate change in the Himalayas and promote The Great Himalayan Trail as the best tourism route in the world offering trekkers experience of extremely rich cultures, breathtaking landscapes and diverse range of flora and fauna. “The world wants to support Nepali communities in their climate change battle, but they need to be told how and where. My effort to walk from east to west is to find places and people who need help from the global community in their battle,” said Appa, speaking at the President’s office.

COLD WAVE KILLS TWO; IN MOHOTTARI

Kathmandu, 13 Jan.: The number of people succumbing to cold has reached two in the past five days in Mahottari district, RSS reports from Bardibas.

Sixty-year-old Rajendra Mahara of Dalitbasti in Nainhi-8 is the latest victim. Mahara passed away on Thursday night.

Earlier, on Monday, 71-year-old Nirodevi Singh of Bela in Ankar-5 had died of cold, according to the District Police Office, Mahottari.

Life continues to be hit hard due to the sudden fall in mercury since Monday. Heavy fog and cold wave has forced people to stay indoors.
