SURYA BAHADUR THAPA CELEBRATES 85TH BIRTHDAY
Kathmandu, 20 March: Surya Bahadur Thapa celebrated his 85th
birthday Tuesday.
He held a reception at his Maligaon residence.
Thapa was member of parliament’s upper house after fist legislative
elections in 1959 and joined panchayat politics after King Mahendra
dissolved he elected parliament in December 1960.
Thapa held various ministerial positions and became prime minister in the
panchayat.
He launched RPP after parties were legalized in1990; he formed
Rashtriya Janashakti Party (RJP) after quitting RPP for the second time following differences with Chairman Pashupati Shumshere Rana.
Thapa was last prime minister under royal rule of King Gyanendra.
