FORMER RARA OFFICIALS IN JUDICIAL CUSTODY
Kathmandu, 5 May: The Special Court on Friday sent former Local Development Officer (LDO) of Bara Murari Prasad Nepal and engineer Meghu Jaiswal in judicial custody. The court refused their bail plea, The Kathmandu Post reports.
The court said it refused the bail by considering the nature of the corruption case against them and the evidences provided by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
A full bench of the court led by Chairman Gauri Bahadur Karki had earlier given the duo some time to defend the case themselves.
"Based on the nature of corruption, the court did not fix the bail in the corruption case involving the former LDO and the engineer," said Court Registrar Dhir Bahadur Chanda. They have been sent to the Dilli Bazaar jail.
The CIAA had on Monday filed a corruption case against 41 government officials and members of the All-Party Mechanism on charges of embezzling Rs 22.76 million allocated for local development.
The officials have been accused of forging documents of 15 road projects to gobble up the money.
They also allegedly hiked the estimated cost while handing over a bridge construction contract. The duo has been accused of violating the Public Procumbent Act by not following due procedures during transactions.
The LDO told the court that he was compelled to pass the annual plans and programmes illegally due to pressure from underground outfits.
