BIG THREE, MADESH MORCHA MEET INCONCLUSIVE
Kathmandu, 8 May:: The meeting of the three major parties and the Madhesi Front today has been postponed until tomorrow after failing to reach agreement on the federal structure, RSS reeports.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Nepali Congress vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel said that the UCPN-Maoist put forward the proposal of delineating the federal provinces on the basis of singular ethnicity whereas the Nepali Congress took the stance that the federal states should be multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic.
"The Maoist party has again raised its earlier demand of 14 provinces in the meeting today. The Maoist which had stated during the talks held at Hattiban Resort before this that it could accept six to seven province model has now backtracked," he said.
Stating that they had reached close to a deal on the issue of provinces until last evening, Paudel said that they were agreed in creating one province by incorporating at least two ethnic bases, but retracted from that today.
He added that they would brief the Constitutional Committee meeting tomorrow about this and urge it to proceed ahead with the remaining process.
The Nepali Congress vice-president stated that the Constitutional Committee should move forward according to the process if the parties fail to agree on state restructuring as stated in the five-point agreement.
CPN-UML president Jhala Nath Khanal said discussions were ongoing and the meeting today has been postponed until 10 a.m. tomorrow after the parties could not reach an agreement in today´s meeting.
DEB GURNG SAYS HIS MAOIST FACTION WON’T ACCEPT CONSTITUTION PREPARED BY THREE PARTIES IN A DARK ROOM
Kathmandu, 8 May: The Standing Committee member of Unified CPN (Maoist) Dev Gurung has said that the Baidya faction will not accept the constitution that is prepared by the leaders of the three major political parties by sitting in a ´dark room´, RSS reports.
Speaking at an interaction organised by Media Vision Nepal here on Tuesday, he said the Baidya Faction of the UCPN-Maoist was not ready to accept such constitution.
He also warned of burning down the constitution if the constitution was failure to address people´s expectations.
Leader of the CPN (UML), Bharatmohan Adhikari, accused Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai of expanding the cabinet by going against the spirit of the five-point agreement signed to form the national unity government.
He added that Dr Bhattarai has divided the ministries to the United Democratic Madhesi Front´s leaders unilaterally as per the four-point agreement signed by the UCPN-Maoist and the UDMF while forming the a Bhattarai-led majority government.
UML leader Adhikari also urged the political parties not to spend more time regarding the number, name, and delineation of the provinces as there was no alternative to federalism for the prosperous new Nepal, adding that the new constitution should incorporate the concerns of women, Dalit, and Madhesi people´s social, education and other rights.
Chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Nepal, Upendra Yadav charged the leaders of the three major political parties for trying to write the constitution rather than from the Constituent Assembly.
