FURTHER DETAILS OF TUESDAYNIGHT’S DRAMATIC DEVELOPMENTS EXTENDING CA TENURE Kathmandu, 22 May: Government decided to extended the CA tenure by three month through a 13th amendment to the interim constitution with option to extend it further by three more months. Narayan Kazi Shrestha of Maoists.said the government was ‘forced into the decision with no alternative to end a deadlock” Shrestha said,‘If necessary, there’s provision for another three month extension in the bill.” He added effort will be made to promulgate a promulgate in the next days ‘by moving forward with understanding”. Parties, it may be recalled, couldn’t promulgate a basic law in four years. The Maoist called the bill registration in parliament as a ‘safety valve’. NC President Sushil Koirala told reporters at his residence Tuesday night the decision amounted to ‘contempt of court’ and will bd discussed in the central committee hinting government could withdraw from government. Koirala called the government decision ‘desperate and against the supreme court verdict.’ Meanwhile, advocate and constitutional lawyer Toka Ram Bhattarai called the government a ‘contempt of court’. He said,” Government must obey court decision.” He recalled,” The supreme court gave government three options: election, referendum or use of other constitutional measures.
