PRESIDENT SUMMONS PARTY LEADERS, DEADLOCK IN
CONSTITUTION DRAFTING UPDATE
Kathmandu, 25 May: A concerned President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav Friday afternoon summoned leaders of ruling parties and NC which just walked out of
government and asked them to promulgate a constitution in the remaining two days by 27 May.
The president held discussions with leaders of the UCPN (Maoist), UML, Madesh Morcha and NC after they failed to come to an agreement on a constitution
following bilateral and multilateral talks since early morning although they first
decided to promulgate a basic law by the 27 May deadline.
The President asked leaders to launch a constitution through consensus.
NC and UML rejected a Maoist proposal for 10 or14 ethnic provinces and instead forwarded a proposal for eight provinces without identity.
Following differences, NC and UML also rejected a vote in the
constituent assembly (CA) to adopt a basic law.
