PROTESTS AGAINST GOVT. MOVE MOUNTS UPDATE
Kathmandu, 24 May: A meeting of different leftist and fringe political parties held today has decided that the government decision to extend the CA term against the Supreme Court's verdict was arbitrary, RSS reports.
Issuing a press statement after the meeting, the leaders have said that the major political parties are misusing the time of the CA by escaping the constitution writing process.
Protesting the fresh move of the government to extend the CA term, they demanded promulgation of new constitution by May 27 and stop 'conspiracies' against writing a constitution.
They also demanded to ensure the rights of peasants, workers, squatters, women, dalit, Muslims, minorities, marginalized, and people of backward communities by maintaining the existing multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious and regional diversities of the country.
General Secretary of CPN (Masal) Mohan Bikram Singh, General Secretary of Rastriya Janamorcha Santa Bahadur Nepali, central member of CPN (ML) Kapil Pokhrel and others have issued the press statement demanding timely constitution and protesting the government step to extend the CA term yet another time.
RSS adds:: Human Rights and Civil Society has seriously objected to the government proposal for extending the Constituent Assembly (CA) term stating that the government move was a contempt of court and challenges the principles of power separation and independence of judiciary.
Issuing a press statement today, the Society has objected to the decision and said that the news of CA term extension has added to further doubts and uncertainty regarding the promulgation of new constitution despite the pledges of top leaders of the major political parties.
Civil society leaders Surya Prasad Shrestha, Prof Kapil Shrestha, Purnakant Adhikari, Charan Prasain, Dinesh Tripathi, Purushottam Dahal and Dr Sundarmani Dixit have urged the CA, government, political parties and leaders to forge consensus in the thorniest issues to promulgate the constitution at the earliest based on democracy, rule of law and human rights.
The civil society leaders have also urged the responsible leaders not to deliver speeches that destabilize existing ethnic and social harmony, and fraternity in the country.
