CHINA COMES OUT FORMALLY AGAINST A FEDERAL STRUCTURE SAYS MOHAN BAIDHAYA Kathmandu, 29 July: Chairman Mohan Baidhaya of CPN Maoist revealed last week after a 10-day China visit, foreign play in Nepal on the pretext of federalism isn’t acceptable to Beijing. “In Nepal, on the pretext of federalism, the increasing foreign influence has attracted the interest of China which says that’s not acceptable to it. “As a neighbour, we must consider Chinese concerns, Baidhaya said after concluding a 10-day China visit.. “If foreign play continues in the name of federalism, Nepal will have to pay heavy cost for development and constitution You [Nepal] will have to develop economically to institutionalize a federal structure,” the chief of the new Maoist formed after a split from ruling UCPN Maoist said. China, according to Baidhaya, believes One Madesh, One Pradesh proposal was an attempt to divide Nepal, unacceptable to China. Chinese opposition to a federal structure comes after revelations of funding of some NGOs in Nepal by European donors, including United Kingdom, for a federal structure to replace a unitary state, The original MJF,now split into groups, was an NGO funded by donors and now acquired status of a national party.
