REBEL MAOISTS WITHDRAW AGITATION Kathmandu, 7 July: The street-based agitation stated to be staged by the Maoist ex-fighters in Chitwan; Shaktikhor-based third division camp from Saturday has been put off, RSS reports from Chitwan.. They have adjourned the pre-scheduled street demonstration with the government and the Unified CPN-Maoist turning to be positive towards their demands, said Kabi Lama, a combatant living in third division. Earlier, the disgruntled ex-fighters had taken to street on Friday to protest the army integration process. They came up with the decision to stop the street protest, set to be staged up to 12 noon today, after Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai including other UCPN -Maoist leaders gave positive nod to their demands, Lama further said. The integration process saw halt across the country when they ascended to street from the cantonment and chanted slogans against the selection process, terming it 'disrespectful'. The ex-combatants have put forward six-point demands including respectful integration, acceptance to existing educational qualification of combatants and scrapping age limit during integration, arrangement of payment to those opting for voluntary retirement through checks in lump sum and granting compensation to the combatants whose human rights were infringed during the decade-long armed conflict. Before this, 70 ex-fighters were selected for the army integration till Friday. Nnnn NSU PROPOSES JANUARY VOTE Kathmandu, 7 July: The reshuffled Nepal Students' Union (NSU) affiliated to the Nepali Congress has proposed date for holding its national general convention in the second week of January, next year, RSS reports. The Central Working committee meeting of the NSU kicked off in the Capital from Saturday came up with the proposal to hold the general convention in January, said NSU spokesperson UP Lamichhane. The meeting is expected to take concrete decisions on the issues of organisational strengthening, among others. At today's session of the meeting, Union President Ranjit Karna presented a political report focusing on educational sector reform, organisational strengthening and improvements in the Tribhuvan University. The report has also raised the issues of arbitrary collection of fees by the TU constituent colleges. The next meeting of the Union is to take place again on Sunday. It may be noted that the NSU mother party the Nepali Congress had formed a new working committee under the leadership of Karna after the previous one led by Pradeep Poudel failed to hold the general convention in time. nnnn
