UML LEADER CALLS FOR PRESIDENTIAL INTERVENTION TO END CRISIS Kathmandu, 26 Aug.: Secretary of the CPN-UML, Shankar Pokhrel, has said that the opposition parties would in no way sit for any talks even if the Alliance formed by the ruling parties, calls on the opposition parties for talks, RSS reports. At a news conference organized by the Press Chautari Nepal, Pyuthan, this [Sunday] morning, Pokhrel said that it would not be acceptable to stay in the government and at the same time counter from the street and added that this practice would push the republicanism into confrontation. Stating that the resignation of the caretaker government is not the priority at present, Pokhrel said that dialogue, constitutional outlet and consensus among political parties are the top priorities. The UML leader said that the responsibility of the ultimate resolution of the country lies in the hands of the President and stressed that the president should play a role to give an outlet to the country's political stalemate. The Constituent Assembly (CA) could not give the new constitution as the UCPN-Maoist tried to impose ethnic states, he said. Saying there was no alternative to going among the people, Pokhrel expressed the view that a Legislature-Parliament would complete the remaining works of the constitution writing after the elections. He said that the UCPN-Maoist has lagged behind from the previous agreements, and added that a condition of political stalemate was created due to the party's working style of signing agreements and not implementing in practice. Pokhrel, who arrived here for a district-level party cadres' training, said that the CPN-UML has launched a campaign with new ideology and strategy. RSS Meanwhule, Vice-chairperson of the CPN-UML, Bidya Devi Bhandari, has claimed that the Bhattarai-led government would be toppled within a couple of weeks. Talking to media persons at Lahan in Siraha district, Bhandari said that the government would be displaced within one or two weeks by a people's movement to be launched soon under the leadership of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. She stressed on the formation of a national consensus government at the earliest by removing the government as it was immoral and unconstitutional with the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly (CA). nnnn
