The huge landslide nearby the dam has also posed serious threat to reservoir, said locals and employees working in the hydropower. 'Landslide has fallen this morning from around 100 metres up' said Yogaraj Bhattarai, an employee in Kaligandaki 'A'. He added the mudslide has also caused obstruction to the way to reservoir. The natural disaster has also put human settlements upright to the dam to further crisis. nnnn SWOLLEN NARAYANI RIVER ERODES GANDAK SPUR THREATENING A BURST Kathmandu, 10 Aug.: Erosion triggered by the Narayani River in Nawalparasi has caused heavy damages to spur no. 12 of Bigaipa dam under Gandak embankment, RSS reports from Parasi.. There is every chance that the Gandak embankment itself would go outburst with the rise in water flow if spur was not maintained at the earliest, said water resource campaigner, Kul Deep Acharya. Though filling stones on nets is being carried out as a measure to prevent erosion, it has also not been that much effective. According to the Gandak agreement, it is the sole obligation of Indian side to oversee and maintain the embankment constructed in Gandak area. The loss to the spur was caused due to Indian side's indifference to maintain embankment and spurs this year, said joint-secretary at Gandak Struggle Committee, Shailendra Sharma. Narsahi VDC, where the spur no. 12 lies, is the most vulnerable area as the mainstream of Narayani river directly hits the spur. The Indian government had started maintaining all the embankments in the region in 2066 BS after Gandak struggle in 2065. But, sub-standard quality works caused demolition of spur the same year and the façade of the spur witnessed heavy damages three times last year. The Gandak dam is likely to burst out when effective maintenance and protection of embankment is not carried out in line with the understanding reached between Gandak Struggle Committee and Indian technicians in 2065 BS. nnnn
