HIGH RISK OF TYPHOID FEVER IN VALLEY Kathmandu, 2 Aug.: A study has shown that Kathmandu valley is a high risk area for typhoid fever, RSS reports.. It is in high risk because of lack of proper management of drinking water and drainage and because of polluted water, WHO has said. It was confirmed from a study on the patients who visited the government and private sector hospitals. To lessen the effect, the Ministry of Health and Population has been running programmes with high priority for controlling the fever. The Department of Health Services has run vaccination programmes against typhoid with assistance from the international vaccination organization. It is more seen in children under 15. Doctors said this is caused by polluted water. According to Director of Child Health Division Dr. Shyam Raj Upreti, the vaccine programme run for children under 15 was conducted for 70,000 students of 400 schools in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts and aims to do so in Kathmandu district as well. Works are underway in policy level to make it nationwide, said the Division. Lalitpur Public Health Officer Balkrishna Bhusal said a positive impact was made in the district from the programme. nnnn
