SUSHIL KOIRALA GREETED WITH BLACK FLAGS IN ILAM Kathmandu, 22 Aug.: Black flags welcomed main opposition NC President Susil Koirala, who was accompanied by youth leader Gagan Thapa, in Ilam Wednesday. Supporters of Limbuwan and National Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (Nefin) waived black flags at Koiurala and accused BC as an ‘anti-federalist; party. The indigenous cadres showed black flags to Koirala who arrived here in Ilam to address an assembly along with youth leader Gagan Thapa. Koirala supported his party’s federal approach. The NC president began a our of the eastern region Tuesday in the midst of a central committee meet which will resume after the visit ends. Nnnn SUSHIL KOIRALA SAYS CHANGE IS REVOLUTION NOT GUN Kathmandu, 22 Aug.: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has said revolution is change but not gun, RSS reports from Mangalbare.. Inaugurating the municipal conference of the party at Ilam on Wednesday, President Koirala said the Maoist party has misinterpreted the concept of revolution. "Revolution is change, and the gun is not a key to capture state authority," he said, adding, "The Maoist party misinterpreted the concept of revolution." The NC is always for stability of democracy, he said. Similarly, President Koirala claimed that the national consensus government would be led by his party. Koirala accused the CPN-Maoist of obduracy, which he said, led the country to this critical juncture. On the occasion, central member of the party Dr Minendra Rijal warned that the Maoist party would be swept away from the history if it tried to do anything against the President. He urged Maoist leaders Prachanda and Baburam not to provoke the President, otherwise face identity crisis. Youth leaders of the party Bishwo Prakash Sharma, Dhana Raj Gurung, Gagan Thapa, and Bhishma Raj Angdebe spoke about the party line. Twenty persons contributing to the democratic movements from the district were honoured on the occasion. nnnn LANDSLIDES DISPLACE 112 FAMILIES IN DOLAKHA Kathmandu, 22 Aug.: As many as 112 families have been displaced due to landslides that took place in Dolkha district between mid July to mid August this year, RSS reports from Dolakha.. Majority of the displaced families are from Bhirkot VDC. As many as 24 families have been completely displaced while others have been affected partially as a result of landslides. Similarly, landslides completely displaced six families in Bhimeshwor Municipality and 10 other families have been partially affected. The landslides also damaged houses in Jafe, Namdu, Mirge, Babare, Sahare, Suspakshamawati, Dandakharka, Chyama, Pawati and Laduk VDCs, according to Nepal Red Cross Society. Harka Bahadur Shrestha, President of NRCS, Dolkha, said the NRCS had distributed clothing, utensils, and tent worth Rs. 6,500 per family as immediate relief to the landslide victims. The landslide completely displaced 49 families and left partial damages in the houses of 63 families in Dolakha, added Shrestha. nnnn BRITAIN’S PRINCE HARRY CAUGHT NAKED Kathmandu, 22 Aug,: Photographs of a naked Prince Harry in a Las Vegas hotel room have popped up online, AP reports from London. Celebrity gossip site TMZ.com published two pictures of the 27-year-old royal cavorting with what they called a mystery woman in a VIP suite. Harry appeared nude. It wasn´t clear if the woman was naked. TMZ said Prince Harry disrobed Friday during a game of strip billiards in his VIP suite. The pictures show a pool table but it wasn´t clear whether there were others in the room. The celebrity website said the prince and a large entourage had gone down to a hotel bar and invited some women up to his room. Prince Harry´s office confirmed Wednesday that the photos were of the prince but declined to make any further comment. Nnnn MARS ROVER CURIOSITY PREPARES FOR TEST DRIVE Kathmandu, 22 Aug.: Scientists were preparing to send Curiosity on its first test drive over the billion-year-old rocks of Mars and said a busted wind sensor wouldn't jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there. AP reports from Los Angeles . at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena turned four of the rover's six wheels in place this week in a successful "wheel wiggle" to test the steering for Wednesday's trek, mission manager Mike Watkins said. The rover will move forward about 10 feet (3 meters), turn right, then back up and park slightly to the left of its old spot, Watkins said. You will definitely see tracks," he said. The test drive is part of a health checkup the rover has been undergoing since arriving on Aug. 5. Eventually, the rover could roam hundreds of feet a day over the ancient crater where it landed. Meanwhile, researchers discovered the damaged wind sensor while checking out instruments that Curiosity will use to check the Martian weather and soil. The cause of the damage wasn't known, but one possibility is that pebbles thrown up by Curiosity's descent fell onto the sensor's delicate, exposed circuit boards and broke some wires, said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity. A second sensor is operating and should do the job, but Vasavada said scientists may "have to work a little harder" to determine wind speed and direction, which are important factors that can determine when the rover is allowed to move. "But we think we can work around that," he added. Scientists also continued to test and calibrate Curiosity's 7-foot (2.1-meter)-long arm and its extensive tool kit — which includes a drill, a scoop, a spectrometer and a camera — in preparation for collecting its first soil samples and attempting to learn whether the Martian environment was favorable for microbial life. nnnn
