FOR UK, EMBARASSING MASS FUNERALS OF GURKHAS KILLED DURING WORLD WAR II BEING HELD
Kathmandu, 4 Sept.:: A leading organization of former British Gurkha soldiers on Monday announced that it will perform the final rites of all those Nepali ancestors who were killed in various battles, including the World War II, while in the service for the British Empire, Nahir Tiwaruwrites in Reoyblicafrom OPOkhara..
According to Padam Bahadur Gurung, president of Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen´s Organization (GAESO), the final rites for thousands of Gurkha soldiers, whose names and addresses have so far been kept secret by the United Kingdom (UK), will be performed before the foundation stone for a Gurkha monument would be laid in Salme Danda of Syangja district by this year´s end.
The GAESO is already in possession of the design of the Gurkha monument to be built at an estimated cost of Rs four billion. The construction work of the monument will begin from November 27.
The GAESO claims that around 60,000 Nepali people who fought on behalf of the British Empire were killed in the Second World War and several other wars. Gurung said that the GAESO came up with the estimated figure after studying for years the history of those countries who fought wars with the British Empire.
Gurung said, “In addition to Gurkha soldiers, thousands of Nepali people were used by the British Empire as human shields in the first and second World Wars. The British government has never divulged the details about those Nepalis killed in the wars as it fears that it might be forced to spend a huge amount of money as compensation to the families of the dead.”
“Those Gurkha soldiers who were killed or went missing in various wars belong to all ethnicities,” said Gurung. “We will consult priests of all castes and communities to perform the collective final rites.”

CPN (M) OPTS FOR COLLECTIVE LEADERSHIP
Kathmandu, 4 Sept : The UCPN (M) has decided to go for collective leadership in its organizational structure even at the state, district, area and village level, four years after the party adopted collective leadership at the central level.Kiran Pun writes in Republica..
A joint meeting of the party office bearers and the secretariat members at the party headquarters in Perishdanda took the decision on Monday.
"Our central office team on Sunday submitted a proposal to the office bearers on adopting collective leadership at state, district, area and village levels. The same proposal has been endorsed," said Dor Prasad Upadhyay, a member of central office secretariat and member of general convention organizational committee.
According to the decision, the party´s lower organizational structure will have chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasure to take collective decision. Earlier, secretary and in-charge used to lead the party at the local level.
"But the office bearers could not take decision of the number of members in the committee due to the lack of time today," said Upadhaya.
Party Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said the party will take a decision on the numbers of members and also representatives to be included in the general convention of the lower committees.
"The party decided to elect representative on the basis of the federalism and inclusion," said Sapkota.
According to Upadhyay, they have estimated around 2,000 representatives will participate in the general convention. But a decision to this effect is yet to be taken.
They have also proposed to form councils at different levels so that meeting of the party at different levels can take place easily. As of now, the party has been facing difficulties in convening meeting of its different committees as they are too big for holding the meeting.
"We have 300 and 500 member committees. We have taken more time to settle problems so that the same problems will not surface inthe future," Upadhyaya added.
Maoist has 15 state committees -13 geographical and communication and cultural state committees. Likewise, around 100 district committees, including 75 geographical districts.
