"The Congress will give up the prime minister's berth after the promulgation of a new constitution is guaranteed," (NC President Sushil Koirala, The Kathmandu Post, 8 Sept.) nnnn TWO NEPALI MAIDS POSSIBLY MURDERED IN LEBANON Kathmandu, 8 Sept.: Two Nepali migrant workers allegedly committed suicide in Lebanon in the past week, Pratap Bista reports in the Kathmandu Post from Beirut.. The victims have been identified as Shanti Rai from Solukhumbu and Renuka Jarghamagar from Kavre. However, Binod Upreti of the foreign employment community association in Lebanon said the causes of deaths were yet to be established. Jarghamagar and Rai allegedly committed suicide on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. Both were working as domestic helps in Beirut for the past two years. It has been learnt that the women reportedly killed themselves due to domestic violence meted out to them by their employers. The body of Jarghamagar was flown to Kathmandu on Wednesday, while Rai's is yet to be repatriated. Meanwhile, Nepalis residing in Lebanon have demanded strict action against the house owners. They have accused the house owners of murdering the two Nepali women. They claimed that Magar and Rai were physically and mentally tortured and sexually harassed. Uprety said that around 10 cases of sexual harassment are filed in the organisation every month. Among them, around two people die of torture. There are 8,333 Nepali women in Beirut working as house-maids and earn only 100-150 dollars per month. However, even that amount is not given to them on time. Moreover, the house owners keep the passports of the house-maids which make it impossible for them to return home. nnnn
