GANDAK RECONSTRUCTION WORK COMES TO A HALT
Kathmandu, 11 Oct.:India has stopped the construction of embankment in Narayani River saying possibility of the bursting of the dam was over with the end of the rainy season, RSS reports..
India was constructing the embankment in the Narayani River after the River in this rainy season completely eroded the Spur No. 12 under B Gap and risk of bursting the dam had appeared.
However, local residents said there is a high risk of breaking of the dam if the water level in the River rises.
The Indian side had started the embankment construction after the government exerted pressure as the river swept away the Spur No. 12 in mid-September and eroded some parts between the Spur No. 11 and 12 but it has now completely stopped the construction, said Chairman of the Gandak Struggle Committee Rambaran Kebat.
A team led by Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai had inspected the site and had expressed commitment to take initiative to forward the maintenance of the embankment but Indian side has stopped all the construction works.
Water resource activist Kuldeep Acharya said the Indian side was constructing the embankment after pressure was created from Nepali side. He said the construction was completely halted though it was not going on smoothly.
Some 13 VDCs have the risk of inundation if the water level in the river rises and the dam collapses.

SUSHIL KOIRALA CALLS FOR BUILDING TRUST
Kathmandu, 11Oct.: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has said the first requirement to build trust among the political parties was the formation of national consensus government, RSS reports..
Addressing the far western regional orientation of the party at Tikapur of Kailali on Wednesday, President Koirala said the UCPN-Maoist, which is changing its focus on election and restoration of Constituent Assembly, could not be believed.
"It has been six years since when consensus has become elusive due to the Maoists," he said, accusing the Maoists of deceiving parties and people time and again though the NC extended hand for unity, cooperation and consensus repeatedly.
He urged the ruling Maoist and the Madhesi parties to become responsible for the formation of national consensus government.
Senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, however, said it was pointless in engaging in blame game if the constitution is ensured after the restoration of the CA.
If the UCPN-Maoist and the Madhesi parties agreed on 11 provinces, the NC would accept it.
On the occasion, Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel accused the UCPN-Maoist of deceiving the parties with the lure of prime minister's post.
The best option we have at present is election, he argued.
The orientation was addressed by party general secretaries, spokesperson and other leaders.
The orientation is attended by district president of the party and convention representatives from all the nine districts in the region. The orientation would last for three days.
