NATURAL DISASTERS CLAIM 1,000 LIVES EVERY YEAR
Kathmandu, 24 Oct.: Over one thousand people face untimely death annually in Nepal because of natural disasters with almost 300 deaths due to floods and landslides alone, shows a statistics,RSS reports from Nepal gunj..
Similarly, the loss of property from the natural hazards in a year in Nepal stands at Rs. 1.2 billion. According to a study conducted by the INGO Mercy Corps, the possible loss of disasters could be reduced by Rs. 400 if one Euro is invested in pre-information system.
The Mercy Corps report shows that 26,656 people have lost their lives in the incidents of natural disasters in the past 37 years. Similarly, 4.7 million people have been directly affected, around 841,000 hectares of land has been damaged and 236,000 livestock have died.
Following the massive losses of lives and property by natural disasters every year in Nepal, the organizations is working for the expansion of natural disasters pre-information system with a view to preventing possible damages from natural hazards. Banke, Baridya, Kailali, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Saptari and Sunsari are considered as high-risk zones in view of natural disasters and the organisation is launching a public awareness campaign aimed at mitigating the damages by natural disasters with the cooperation of other 200 organisations.

ENVOY TO EU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
Kathmandu. 24 Oct : Ambassador of European and Head of Mission of Nepal to the EU, Ram Mani Pokharel presented his letters of credence to Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council today [Tuesday] at the Headquarters of the General Secretariat of the European Council, Brussels, reports..
On the occasion, Ambassador Pokharel expressed appreciation and gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Nepal to the EU for their continued political and economic cooperation and support to Nepal, said the Embassy of Nepal, Mission of Nepal to the EU in its press note today.
Similarly, he briefed President Van Rompuy that the ongoing political process is going to be concluded very soon and Nepal will wholeheartedly dedicate herself in the much overdue economic transformation. He requested for an enhanced level of economic support and cooperation to Nepal from the EU for the next level of transformations of Nepal.
In response, European Council President Rompuy pledged EU´s support and cooperation to the Nepal´s ongoing political and peace processes in the future, too.
On the occasion, the two exchanged views and opinions on the matters of mutual interests as well, it is learnt.
