NNNNN RANGER RECALLED FOR FAILURE TO SHOOT DEAD DHRUBE Kathmandu, 26 Dec.: The Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation today transferred the Chief Warden of Chitwan National Park Jhamak Bhahadur Karki to the Department of National Park for his failure to hunt down a ‘lovesick’ elephant that has trampled several people to death, The Himalayan Times reports.. The ministry has sent Maheshwor Dhakal in place of Karki. Karki has been called for a 90-day training in Kathmandu, so we decided to send Dhakal to Chitwan, said Krishna Prasad Acharya, spokesperson for the ministry. But sources said Karki was called to Kathmandu for his failure to handle the situation in the aftermath of the terror unleashed by the wild tusker, named Dhrube, that has been on the run. Locals are demanding that the male elephant be killed so that several other lives could be saved. Even an army execution squad was deployed to hunt down the beast which is said to have killed as many as 15 people in the last four years. Amid all this, animal rights groups have pleaded for the life of the ‘lovelorn’ tusker. But Acharya said there have been no changes in local administration’s ruling to hunt down the elephant. The tusker, which experts say went rogue after being prevented from mating, a few days ago had killed an elderly couple. Different political parties in Chitwan took to the streets last week to protest park authorities’ failure to capture the killer elephant, prompting the authorities to order army to launch a shoot-to-kill order.
