Nnnn TWO OFFICIALS KILLED INJHA[A ACCIDENT Kathmandu, 18 Dec.:Two civil service employees lost their lives in a road accident at Kerkha of Jhapa along the East West Highway Monday night, RSS reports from Damak.. The deceased were identified as Assistant Health Workers at the District Public Health Office, Jhapa, Shashidhar Shiwakoti and Yekraj Bhandari. The tragic accident took place when a bus (Ko 1 Kha 2680) hit a motorbike (Me 3 Pa 454) they were riding at 4.00 pm on Monday, police confirmed. Seriously injured Bhandari breathed his last at Lifeline Hospital in Damak and Shiwakoti died while undergoing treatment at Neuro Hospital, Biratnagar. The accident occurred when they were returning home after administering Rubella-Measles vaccination. Nnnn FORMER JUDGES DEPUTED TO SUPREME COURT Kathmandu, 18 Dec.:: Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi yesterday deputed two chief judges of appellate courts a week after their tenure as ad hoc judges in the Supreme Court expired, The Himalayan Times reports.. “The Chief Justice deputed them to the apex court in order to prepare the texts of their judgment when they were functioning as ad hoc judges in the Supreme Court,” Lohit Chandra Shah, Registrar, Supreme Court told The Himalayan Times. The Chief Justice approved their deputation yesterday, according to Shah. Baidhyanath Upadhayay and Gyanendra Bahadur Karki were deputed to the Supreme Court as their tenure as ad hoc judges of the Supreme Court ended on December 7. Upadhayay is currently Chief Judge of Surkhet Appellate Court and Karki is the Chief judge to Jumla Appellate Court. Along with their terms, Justice Tarka Raj Bhatta’s tenure in the Supreme Court had also ended, but due to the age bar, he had crossing 63 years of age, he got automatic retirement. Appellate court judges retire after completing 63 years of age but judges in the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65 years. As per Article 110 (1) and (3) of the Interim Constitution, the Chief Justice can assign any judge of any court for a specific time to carry out investigation or execute judicial tasks in any court of law. Stating that it would not be easy for them to go to appellate courts, the judges had expressed interest in remaining in the Supreme Court, and the Chief Justice had responded positively, according to sources. On December 7, when the President did not approve the ordinance recommended by the government, the tenure of the five ad hoc judges expired. Ad hoc judges Kamal Narayan Das and Bharat Bahadur Karki were considering whether to resume legal practice. The government and the Judicial Council had recommended an ordinance to President Ram Baran Yadav for amending the Judicial Council Act 1990 so as to retain the retiring judges without parliamentary hearing, but the President did not accept their recommendation. Nnnn COLD WAVE SWEEPS TERAI Kathmandu,18 Dec.:: Three persons died of biting cold in different districts of Tarai in the past two days, sources said todayP MoNDAY], The Himalayan Times reports from Mohottari. With mercury dipping, the number of cold-related patients has soared in the region. Cold wave that has swept the plain has increased the chill dramatically. Two persons died of biting cold in Mahottari. Beggar, Sanjeev Khatwe, 60, died due to cold in Matihani on Sunday. Likewise, Jivan Sah, 7, died of cold at Jaleswor Municipality on Sunday. The minor had passed away at his maternal uncle’s home at Jaleswor. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the District Hospital Jaleswor. Normal life has been hit hard due to haze and cold wave in Mahottari. Dwarika Prasad Sah at the district hospital said the number of patients suffering from common cold, fever and pneumonia has gone up. Health worker Girendra Jha said fog and mist had added woes of the locals. Rudal Mu-khiya Bin, 40, of Murki Paliya at Bara’s Khopawa died of freezing cold on Sunday. Bin suffering from diarrhoea breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the Bara District Hospital. Cold-related patients have crowded the hospital. In Rautahat, cold wave has thrown normal life out of gear. Westward breeze coupled with thick fog has hit the normal life hard. Temperature went down to 10 degree Celsius today. Impoverished people are the worst hit by the cold wave. District Hospital Gaur is receiving 25 patients of pneumonia, cold and diarrhoea every day. Health Office Akhilesh Prasad Singh said his office had instructed the staff to stay at the health posts and health centres. Rautahat Chief District Officer Shivahari Upadhyay said DAO had directed the District Development Committee and Gaur Municipality to provide firewood to make fire at the public places to avoid the coldness. Bad weather: PM puts off visit The proposed lying of a foundation stone ceremony of Subudda Pagalababa Internatio-nal Hospital and Research Centre was postponed today [Monday] after the Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai failed to attend the function in Sahodawa VDC due to bad weather. The PM had to cancel his scheduled visit as his aeroplane could not fly due to unfavourable weather condition. The hospital to be built at a cost of Rs 1.5 billon in the six bigas of land. The followers of the Pagalababa had donated the amount. The trust was for-med under the chairmanship of former CDO Ramratan Mishra and other members include pensioners, entrepreneurs and the civil society. nnnn
