WOMEN PROTEST GIRL BURNINGS
Kathmandu, 27 Dec.: Women rights activists today staged an hour-long sit-in in front of the south gate at Singha Durbar, RSS reports.
The sit-in was organized on the initiative of the national network of women human rights defenders to draw the government's attention towards the increasing cases of violence against women and the government's apathy in taking action against the guilty.
The sit-in was organised demanding constitution of an investigation commission to probe into cases of Saraswoti Subedi of Anamnagar, who is said to have committed suicide on December 15, and Bindu Thakur of Bara, who was burnt.
Similarly, the network also demanded action against those involved in raping and looting Sita Rai, who had returned from overseas employment, said the network.
The women human rights defenders demanded that the Ministry of Home Affairs should apologize publicly as the woman was raped by a policeman. They also called for taking stern action against the guilty.
Rights activist Kala Rai said the existing laws should be reformed to increase the access of women to justice and to take action against the guilty. She called for forming a judicial commission to inquire into Subedi's death as no evidence was found that she committed suicide.

BIJUKCHHE SAYS APRIL ELECTION IMPOSSIBLE
Kathmandu, 27 Dec.: Chairman of Nepal Workers and Peasants' Party, Narayan Man Bijukchhe, has claimed that election to the Constituent Assembly was impossible in April if the political crisis prolongs further, RSS reports from Bhaktapur..
At a function organized to mark the 12th Anniversary of the Dr Ibamura Memorial Hospital and Research Center at Sallaghari in the district on Thursday, leader Bijukchhe said, "Election was possible if the parties forged consensus. But foreign interference has so far foiled the consensus."
He claimed that present government was under the foreign influence, so it continues to stay in power.
At the programme, leader Bijukchhe conferred the Ibamura Award on Vice-Chancellor of Kathmandu University and Chief of Dhulikhel Hospital, Ram Kanth Makaju, Executive Director at the National Kidney Centre Dr Rishi Ram Kafle and Director at the Cancer Hospital, Dr Sudip Shrestha, for their longtime contribution to the health sector.
Founder of the Ibamura Hospital Uttam Krishna Karmacharya and others pointed out the need of ensuring poor people's access to health.
