FOUR MORE MAOISTS WANTED IN JOURNALIST MURDER
Kathmandu, 12 Jan.: Four Maoist cadres wanted by the police for the 2004 murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa are still at large, Prakash Adhikari writes in The Kathmandu Post from Dailekh..
Dailekh police said they have located the whereabouts of the suspects, but that pressure from the government has been stopping them from arresting the men.
It is learnt that Bam Bahadur Khadka, the main accused, is currently taking refuge at the UCPN (Maoist) central office in Paris Danda in Kathmandu. Another accused, Keshav Khadka, is said to be working as a cleaner in a hospital in Pilibhit district in Uttar Pradesh, India. The others, Bam Bahadur KC is reportedly living in Baganaha VDC in Bardiya, while Bhaktiram Lamichhane is in Kohalpur in Banke.
A source at the District Police Office (DPO) in Dailkeh said Khadka and KC were in the PLA camp in Surkhet. The duo opted for voluntary retirement and left the camp after learning that Thapa’s wife, Laxmi, had filed a writ in the Appellate Court, seeking orders to investigate her husband’s death.
“Our investigations confirmed that a few days after the petition was filed, Khadka and KC left the camp after receiving the severance pay,” said a police officer investigating the case. He said pressure from the government has debarred them from arresting the men.
According to the DPO, police authorities in the districts where the suspects are said to be based are not cooperating in the investigations.
Police Inspector Bindo Sharma claimed all the four suspects could be arrested within a matter of a day if they are allowed to carry out their investigations independently.
Of the nine pesons accused in Thapa’s killing, Dailekh police have arrested five Maoist activists—Lachhiram Gharti, Nirak Bahadur Gharti, Jai Bahadur Shahi, Hari Lal Pun and Bir Bahadur KC. The trio has confessed to their involvement in Thapa’s murder on August 11, 2004.
