INDIA POSITIVE ON WATER RESOURCES- Kathmandu, 25 Jan.: The seventh iteration of the Joint Commission on Water Resources meeting at the Secretary level kicked off on Thursday with officials from Nepal and India dwelling on crucial matters related to water resources and energy, The Kathmandu, Post reports.. The meeting discussed bilateral issues, from the Pancheshwor and Koshi High Dam Multipurpose Projects to the pending Power Trade Agreement and the construction of prospective cross-border transmission lines and the development of the Naumure Hydropower Project on the first day. The meeting will last until Friday. Energy Ministry spokesperson Sri Ranjan Lackoul said the first day saw discussions on all agendas and that their Indian counterparts responded positively. He said the meeting also discussed the construction of the Pancheswor Multipurpose Project, continuation of a feasibility study on the Sapta Koshi High Dam Project, water-induced problems like floods, inundations and embankments in border areas and the possibility of curbing the existing power cuts in Nepal. “Concrete decisions will be taken on Friday,” said Lackoul. Energy Secretary Hari Ram Koirala led the Nepali side, while Secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources Dhruba Bijaya Singh led the Indian team. Officials from the Energy Ministry, Ministry of Irrigation and the Nepal Electricity Authority also attended the meeting. An official said the meeting discussed the preparation of a detailed project report for the development of the Sapta Koshi High Dam Multipurpose Project and the Sunkoshi Diversion Project. “The meeting is likely to extend a two-year period for the preparation of the DPR for the two projects,” said the official. nnnn
