PRESIDENT URGES UNITY Kathamandu, 26 Jan.: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today said Nepali people's desire of getting a new constitution through the Constituent Assembly could not be fulfilled as the political parties failed to forge a consensus on Time, RSS reports.. Now, there was no alternative for the political parties to working together with ending current transition in the country to draft a new constitution as per the people's aspirations, he said. "Independent judiciary and rule of law are the backbone of democracy and legal practitioners are social engineers", the President added. Also speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice Khilaraj Regmi said effective judiciary was the pillar of democracy."Judiciary in Nepal is moving head in line with the social sentiments", he said, adding that terrorism and corruption are the present prime challenges of the word. Likewise, NBA outgoing president Prem Bahadur Khadka and newly elected President Harikrishna Karki said the role of NBA was significant to establish rule and law and independent judiciary. Attorney General Mukti Narayan Pradhan argued that legal practitioners should work independently to safeguard the human rights. President of Lawasia Malati Das said the human rights condition in the South Asia was not satisfactory. On the occasion, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated a two-day international conference on legal issues. The conference is jointly organised by the Nepal Bar Association (NBA) and Lawasia. Legal experts from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries including Nepal, Korea, Malaysia and Japan are taking part in the conference. The conference is expected to focus on the discussions about various legal matters including independent judiciary, rule of law, independent Bar, legal education, human rights, legal aid, anti-corruption and money laundering, pro bono, ethnics of the profession and ICT E-commerce privacy.
